In Each Other's Shadows
In Each Other’s Shadows: The Hope for a Better Future is a gripping two-book series about four brothers—Kevin, Kasey, Randy, and Brandon—growing up on the tough South Side of Fort Worth. Poverty, absent fathers, and the daily threats of drugs and violence surround them.
At the center of the story is the middle child, left to live alone while his mother is in rehab, his brothers are locked in juvenile detention, and his beloved grandmother fights for her life. Against overwhelming odds, he fights to make better choices and reach for a brighter future.
This powerful series is more than a story of hardship—it’s a testament to resilience, family bonds, and the determination to change the course of a life.

-
Break Free from Your Environment: First, I want people to understand that you don’t have to be a product of your environment. Good things can come from tough places, or what some might call "the hood." Sometimes, all it takes is a little faith in God and support from others to give you a chance at a better life. It’s about believing you can rise above your circumstances.
-
Breaking the Cycle: The second reason is to show that the negative patterns or "curses" that some families face can be broken. With God's help and your community's support, these cycles can end. It’s important to recognize these patterns so we can work together to break them. You have the power to create a new, positive path for yourself and future generations.
-
Understanding My Brothers: Lastly, I want people to realize that, despite their struggles, my brothers were once kids with dreams and goals. They didn’t plan to end up in prison. It’s crucial to capture those dreams early and find ways to prevent bad outcomes. They are not monsters; they are human beings who faced tough circumstances.
Some people might ask, “What’s wrong with you?” But the better question is, “What happened to you?” This idea was inspired by a book called What Happened to You? by Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Bruce Perry. It talks about how difficult experiences shape us as we grow up. Instead of asking “What’s wrong with this person?” we should ask “What happened to you?” Kids don’t just wake up and decide to become criminals. They don’t plan that for their lives. There are many circumstances and systemic issues in the environments they grow up in that significantly shape who they become. These factors can greatly influence a child’s future.
“You can't change your past, but God has given you the power to change your future.” That’s what I want to express in this book. I hope this book inspires someone to draw closer to God. I also hope it helps fathers connect better with their sons.
The Purpose Behind the Book
Wow! This book is both motivating and inspiring. In spite of incredible circumstances and against all odds, one can rise above them all. God’s divine intervention and self-determination can change the course of your life. This is a “must” read!
